How to choose the right wire rope clip?

The diameter of the clip must correspond to that of the cable. A clip that is too large will not tighten sufficiently, compromising the seal, while one that is too small could damage the cable, reducing its strength.

What is the difference between an open and a closed thimble?

An open thimble is easier to install, as it does not require you to remove the end of the cable. However, it offers less protection against wear than a closed thimble, which protects the cable over the entire circumference of the eye, distributing the load better.

Can I use wire rope clips for steel and textile cables?

Wire rope clips are mainly designed for steel cables. For textile cables, such as Dyneema or Spectra, it is preferable to use specific plastic clips, aluminum crimp sleeves or other non-abrasive materials to avoid damaging the fibers.

What kind of maintenance do splices require?

Regularly inspect splices for signs of wear, corrosion, or fraying. Clean the components with fresh water and a neutral detergent to remove salt and dirt. Lubricate the turnbuckles with a lubricant specifically for the marine environment to keep them running smoothly and prevent corrosion. Periodically check the tightness of the wire rope clips and tighten them if necessary.

What are the essential tools for making a splice?

Essential tools include splicing fids of various sizes, a sharp knife, pliers, a tape measure and, depending on the type of splice, a vise or clamp to hold the cable in place.

How do I choose the right thimble for my cable?

The thimble should have an inside diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the cable to allow for easy insertion. Make sure the thimble material is compatible with the cable material to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Where can I find guides and tutorials on splicing?

Nautica Basile provides guides and tutorials on its website and YouTube channel. In addition, there are numerous books and online resources that explain the different splicing techniques.
