What is the difference between a regular sail needle and one specifically for Dyneema?

Dyneema needles are designed with a rounded and polished tip to slide between the high-tenacity fibers without cutting or damaging them. Standard needles, with their sharp tip, can compromise the strength of the rope.

What type of twine should I use to repair a sail?

Polyester waxed twine is the ideal choice for repairing sails. The wax protects the twine from abrasion and UV rays, while the polyester ensures high strength and durability over time. Marlow is a renowned brand for the quality of its waxed twines.

How do I properly store a stainless steel marlinspike?

After each use, thoroughly clean the marlinspike with fresh water to remove any salt residue. Dry it with a soft cloth and apply a light coat of protective oil to prevent rust formation, especially if you plan to store it for a long period.

Can I use a regular utility knife to cut ropes?

It is not recommended to use a standard utility knife to cut ropes, especially those made of synthetic materials such as Dyneema. A rope-specific cutter, with a sharp and often heated blade, allows you to obtain a clean and precise cut, avoiding fraying of the fibers.

What should I do if a needle bends during splicing?

If a needle bends during splicing, it is important to replace it immediately. Continuing to use a bent needle can damage the rope and make the operation more difficult and dangerous. Be sure to use good quality needles of the appropriate size for the type of rope you are working with.

How often should I replace waxed twine?

The lifespan of waxed twine depends on the frequency of use and environmental conditions. In general, it is advisable to replace the waxed twine if it shows signs of wear, such as fraying, discoloration, or loss of protective waxing. Waxed twine in good condition ensures stronger and more durable seams.
