In general, it's crucial to ensure the compass is level and away from sources of magnetic interference (electrical cables, speakers, etc.). Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions and use the provided drilling template, if applicable. If you're unsure, consult a qualified professional.
A magnetic compass is an analog instrument that indicates the Earth's magnetic north. It's reliable and doesn't depend on electrical power. An electronic (GPS) compass uses satellites to determine position and heading. It's more precise but requires power and can be subject to interference or malfunction. Having both on board is a good safety practice.
Compensation is performed using the adjustment screws located on the compass. The process involves aligning the compass with a known heading (for example, by lining up with two reference buoys) and adjusting the screws to correct any indication errors. This operation should be repeated for several headings (ideally every 45 degrees). There are also smartphone apps available to simplify the compensation process.
