Can I use a car battery disconnect switch on my boat?

Absolutely not. Car battery disconnect switches are not designed for the marine environment, which is highly corrosive. Only use marine-specific models with protected contacts and salt-resistant materials.

What gauge wire should I use to connect the battery disconnect switch?

The wire gauge depends on the maximum current it will need to handle. In general, for currents up to 50A, use at least 6 mm² wire. For higher currents, it's best to consult a marine electrical wiring sizing chart.

How do I connect a selector switch to two batteries?

Connect the positive terminal of each battery to an input on the selector switch. Connect the output of the selector switch to the load (e.g., starter motor). The selector switch will allow you to choose which battery to use or to parallel them.

Does the battery disconnect switch drain the battery?

No, a properly installed battery disconnect switch completely interrupts the electrical circuit, preventing any drain. Make sure it is completely closed when you are not using the boat.
